Milanese // iTAL tEK

Milanese

A native Londoner now based in sunny Birmingham, where he lives right next door to Warp Records' Chris Clark, Steve (Milanese) is an incredible young producer. He made his debut in 2004 with a 12" release called Vanilla Monkey on Warp's dance offshoot 12" imprint, Arcola Records, and then released his debut mini LP, also on Warp, 1 Up. He now signs to Planet Mu for his debut album "Extend".

A familiar phrase to old school video gamers, Milanese describes the sounds on Extend as "jungle / garage / ragga / house / techno. Mashed up robot music, basically like a computer game gone horribly wrong."

This is actually a much too modest attempt at pinning down the fierce, raw aggression of his rumbling beats, the sinister emotional tone and sophisticated panache of his production. While Milanese is a proficient multi-instrumentalist, in particular as a pianist (with 13 years of study notched up) and trombonist, his true forte appears to be 'fusing elements of electro-acoustic music with mad beats and bass'. Emphasis on the bass, okay?

From the digital dancehall holocaust of "Mr Bad News", ragga / garage audio terror and destruction on "Dead Man Walking" and the junglist clash and clatter breakbeats of "Mr Ion", Extend includes the occasional alarming vocal eruption that is guaranteed to scare the living daylights out of passing neighbourhood pets and any children within earshot. So turn it up!

A DJ fixture at squatter parties in the 90s, Milanese spent his time at university studying electronic music (this may have simply constituted a lot of raving) and also busies himself actually making unique instruments. A man of many talents, indeed.

iTAL tEK

Positioned on the shiny bit of the cutting edge of dubstep electronica, Alan Myson's iTAL tEK project has won over a legion of fans in the last year or two with massive releases for SQUARE and Planet Mu providing the essential platform for his intricate programming abilities and moody attitude ridden dubstep style. His debut full length continues his previous good work with a very coherant and personally touched collection of hi-end dubstep convolutions that sounds like the ideal succesor to the Planet Mu IDM staples of yesteryear. Over eleven tracks Ital Tek sweeps between intensely edited rhythm freakouts and bass mangles with an omnipresent compositional element that lends much of his work a developed melodic and harmonic style close to that of label mate Boxcutter, or IDM heroes Wauvenfold or Funkstorung. Strong gear from a talented producer

As a third installation at Andrew's Lane Theatre, Stasis|Collective is proud to present a Planet Mu soundsystem with two live sets from iTAL tEK and Milanese.

"Positioned on the shiny bit of the cutting edge of dubstep electronica", Alan Myson's iTAL tEK project has won over a legion of fans in the last year or two with massive releases for SQUARE and Planet Mu providing the essential platform for his intricate programming abilities and moody attitude ridden dubstep style. While bass weight is often a defining aspect in dubstep, Myson toys with what can only be described as beautiful melodies, alongside techy beats and tricky rhythmic editing.

As for Milanese – it's impossible to predict what will come from this man. Snatching elements from grime, garage and dub, his reputation is second to none for tearing venues limb from limb; What you can be certain of, is to expect the raw power lurking beneath crunchy, over-driven beats and growling subs that has been toying with minds from London to Leitrim. Disorienting and fascinating, "spitting out crackling rhythms as sheet metal arcs shimmer overhead" it was inevitable that his productions would appear in the Planet Mu armoury.

Stasis|Collective Presents : The Black Dog & James Ruskin

StasisCollective presents :

The Black Dog (Live) Dust Science Recordings, Soma, Warp
James Ruskin (DJ) Blueprint, Coda
Fran Hartnett (Live) Creation
Euphiophone (Live) Stasis
Prozac (Dj) VOid

with visual support by blindFate & Razz

Productions by The Black Dog were the catalyst for an entire UK electronica movement in the early 90s. Signed to Warp records, releasing alongside the likes of Aphex Twin, Autechre and LFO, having also remixed and produced tracks for Bjork. Remaining as invigorating as ever, their latest album, 'Radio Scarecrow' (preview track) is beautifully crafted throughout. The Black Dogs signature mosiac perfect detailing, unravels listeners in the warmth and complexities of their sound.

Blurring the lines between techno and electronica, close friend and veteran techno producer James Ruskin has promised a special set to compliment and finish the night. His 2008 album 'The Dash' (preview track) formed "a massive leap that joins the dots between his previous dancefloor savvy material with intricate basslines, beautiful melodies and hypnotic rhythms, 'The Dash' is the mark of an artist in full control of his sound."

Also playing on the night is local techno maestro Fran Hartnett. Often using studio equipment alongside decks, Fran's reputation as a techno heavyweight grows with every set he plays. Deviating from his stronger sound, we have invited him to show a more delicate side to his music. It promises to be something a little different, even for his biggest fans.

Euphiophone is a multi-talented audio and visual producer. Bridging the gap between film scores and electronic music, his evolving melodies and industrial beats will stimulate all listeners.
We are excited to welcome back Prozac, who after a 2 year absence, returns to mix a selection of carefully chosen glitchy electronica tracks.

As always, interesting visuals and quality sound are important factors to our nights. Expect a multiscreen visual display provided by: blindFate & Razz plus a bass heavy (Loudmouth) 10K sound install.

Streamed mixes for your listening pleasure: James Ruskin Mix The Black Dog Fran Hartnett

James Ruskin (Blueprint, Coda, Tresor)

A lot has happened in the six years since James Ruskin’s third studio album ‘Into Submission’ (Tresor, 2001) hit the ground like a dancefloor wrecking ball. Computers have become studios, digital downloading has revolutionised the music industry and the boundaries between rock and dance music have become increasingly blurred. Similarly, in the same period Ruskin has rebuilt his studio, started a family and suddenly last year lost his best friend and Blueprint co-founder, Richard Polson. Taking stock of all these experiences and developments brings us to a new composition that is a huge step in Ruskin’s musical development and fitting testament to the inspiration and life of a close friend. Forming a massive leap in sound that joins the dots between his previous dancefloor savvy material with intricate basslines, beautiful melodies and hypnotic rhythms, ‘The Dash’ is the mark of an artist in full control of his sound. Ruskin`s early exposure to musical alternatives via active radio and club scenes affected his own need for self-expression and identity through music. The rampant electro, hip-hop and emerging Detroit techno scenes channelled his influences toward more electronic sources enough to inspire his own productions in the early 90s. His step toward DJing had already been made in 1991 and his blinding mixing style was earning him top spots across the UK and eventually worldwide by 1996, coinciding with his and Polson’s first releases as ‘Outline’ on the emerging force that was Blueprint.

The Black Dog (Dust Science, Soma, Warp)

The Black Dog are one of the seminal artists in techno and electronica Inspired by hanging out at the KLF’s Trancentral studio, The Black Dog started putting out records that were influential across the world. Soon established as Britain’s leading left-field techno group, The Black Dog were defined the Artificial Intelligence sound and released truly legendary albums such as Spanners, Bytes and Temple of Transparent Balls. They also established themselves as one of the few truly great live acts in techno, able to conjure up extraordinary sounds and riotous grooves that simply tore up the clubs. No-one sounded quite like the Black Dog then, and no-one does now, and the band is healthier now than it has ever been. Now kennelled with the Dust Science label, The Black Dog has since 2005 released two highly acclaimed CDs (Silenced and The Book of Dogma), as well putting out both a re-mastered version of the Virtual and Techno Playtime EPs and seven new singles. The Dog has attracted huge attention as a result, and an LP for Glasgow’s Soma label is due for release in the Winter. But what has always sustained The Black Dog is the enormous groundswell of popular support for the group’s live shows. The band crosses the dividing line between live set and DJ set with ease, and is able to both twist minds and rock parties – often simultaneously. Hence their international reputation and popularity, with dozens of gigs across Europe including performances in front of 45,000 people at Spain’s Monegros Festival and a stellar performance at The Glade. The Black Dog have matured into one of the few must-see acts in dance music and electronica.

Stasis|Collective Presents: Elemental & Gatekeeper

Stasis|Collective presents:
Elemental (Live) [Hotflush]
Gatekeeper (DJ) [Skull Disco]
Kachanski (Live) [Stasis]
Richie !Kaboogie (DJ) [!Kaboogie]

Patch (DJ) [Stasis]
Visual Support from Stasis VJs

Two of the finest names in British Dubstep, Elemental (Hotflush / Destructive Recs / Pitch Black) and Gatekeeper (Skull Disco) alongside exciting new producer Kachanski (Stasis) will grace the stage of the spanking new venue at St Andrew's Lane Theatre, a recently closed theatre whose old walls will be transformed into an arsenal of new sound. An Irish debut for both Elemental and Gatekeeper, dubstep enthusiasts will be familiar with their releases that have featured prominently in more experimental mixes over the last few years. Elemental's set at Glade Festival has brought him to the forefront of British attention in the last few weeks, and while we're all regaining our balance from Shackleton's set at Mantua his spiritual brother Gatekeeper will put us back on our arses the following Friday.

In keeping with Stasis|Collective's ethos, the chosen artists each represent their own retrospective outlets in dubstep, a genre that through the innovation of such labels as Skull Disco is becoming harder and harder to define. Yet while the parameters have been nicely set, the main objective of this lineup is to blow the roof off... and it goes without saying that for this purpose sufficient sound has been catered for.

Mixes: Elemental

Venue: Andrews Lane Theatre

Elemental

North London based producer Elemental started dabbling with production in 1994 with a Roland D5 and Atari ST at school. He later invested in an Akai S2000 sampler and a PC, the rest as they say, is history. In the nineties he Predominantly focused on DnB and experimental Electronic music. At 18 he put out his first DnB release off his own back. A few years later, he became one half of breakbeat garage duo 'Elemental + 3D', releasing on their own label 'Runtime Recordings' in 2002. A couple of years later after some time abroad, he caught the likes of Search & Destroy on Rinse FM and found the sound he had been looking for - dark, heavy syncopated beats and bass.

Since finding Dubstep, Elemental has been focused on bringing his unique sound to the masses, undeniably hard yet dubbed out, dirty bass and hypnotising rhythms. He has had many releases from Destructive, Hotflush, Pitch Black and Halo Beats, and more recently, his seminal track 'Soulfire' featured on Tayo's Fabric mix cd. Elemental also DJ's, and was officially the first person to do a Dubstep 'Live' gig, using Ableton Live on a laptop, mixing up tracks and components of his productions to rapturous audiences across the world, no set is ever the same twice.

On Gatekeeper's new single: GATEKEEPER: "LET GO"/ WEDGE: "OVERFIEND"

Love the jittery pizzicato strings and the fuzzy bass undertow on this; the lushly glacial stringsynths, and the way the tune flips effortlessly back n forth from Feminine to Masculine Pressure: it's built from elements that you'd think wouldn't work together, but, like a jigsaw puzzle or crazy paving, it turns into something you didn't quite expect. Am I miles out in thinking it's got a slightly Old School Jonny L feel to it - "Piper", "Up All Night" - but filtered through 2-Step and Dubstep....?

Either way, another complete winner for the mighty Punch Drunk label, I think. Tom says this should drop sometime in Aug.

Still Gatekeeper is def. the man to watch right now - his mix of Wedge's "Overfiend" is frankly astonishing. It's a five-minute, cinematic-sounding tour de force...spooky as fuck without resorting to needless morbity or gnarly sawbass wobble. (There's a soundclip on his MySpace if you wanna go check) About three minutes in, the track rises from the dead in swirly plumes of dry-ice, and wanders off in search of food...it's pant-wettingly fabulous stuff: there's a strange sound like jets going over at one point, synths that sound like whimpering dogs, etc...if this doesn't get used on the soundtrack of the remake of John Carpenter's "The Thing", then I wanna know why. Wedge's original is pretttty damn good too, with its clicking castenet percussives, ratchety drums, knife-sharp synthswirls and plumes of frozen breath...but I think Gate's mix just pips him in the eerie stakes...

This drops pretty soon on new Bristol label Reduction which is run by DJ ThinKing, who says:

"Yep I'm kicking off my new label, Reduction Records, with a Wedge/Gatekeeper plate, just got the TPs in and will hopefully have the finished product out within the next 6 weeks.

"With respect to future releases and so on, I can confirm that the 2nd release will be from Elemental, but from there it gets a little hazy - I am also in the throes of setting up a second label, so am just sorting out which artists to put on which label. I can say with a degree of confidence that over the next 6mths or so we'll be releasing music from 23hz & Numaestro, TRG, Slaughter Mob, Cyrus, Toasty, and hopefully some newer names too.

"Reduction Records will focus on the more musical side of things, i.e. aiming to release more complete pieces of music, as opposed to a bunch of loops repeated for 6 mins. The newer label (as yet unnamed) will possibly be an outlet for the more conventional 'club bangers' - all I can say for now is watch this space..."

Lots of people have been inquiring about tickets for the show tomorrow.

Everything is on the door - so all the more reason for you to get down early and catch the supporting acts.

Nova on Lyric FM

Ever since RTÉ lyric fm's Nova broadcast Boxcutter live session we've continued to tune into the show every Sunday at 8pm.

Nova is RTÉ lyric fm's contemporary music show. It chronicles what's radical and what's conservative, who's established and who's in the avant garde of todays music.

It has a huge range featuring a blend of contemporary classical, electronic, experimental music. On any given night you might expect to hear a Brian Eno, Aphex Twin, Kraftwerk, a Fourtet remix of Steve Reich or older/more obscure names you may not yet have encountered.

We recommend this show for anyone interested in the origins/pioneers of electronic music or perhaps for artists looking for new inspiration. Related to this is "Electrolight", a six part series by Lyric FM which explores the changing face of electronic music over the last 60 years, decade by decade.

The Boxcutter set itself is a dreamy and experimental blend of new and old material. While our gig will be slightly more dancefloor oriented, it nevertheless gives you an idea of his extraordinary range and ability.

The whole show can be re-listened to via the Lyric FM Nova webpage.

Stasis Dublin | Boxcutter & Live Band

Boxcutter
Dubbed as "one of Ireland's leading electronic producers", Northern Ireland's Barry Lynn leaped into the dubstep scene in 2005, generating huge interest with his genre-crossing production style. Snatching elements from broken beat, cosmic jazz, electronica and dub, he creates beautifully diverse, lush, soundscapes, drifting fearlessly beyond the realms of the mainstream. The Boxcutter sound is deep and bass-laden, layered with intricate bursts of flutes, guitar licks and chopped, twisting beats.

For this event, Boxcutter plans an exclusive performance with a backing ensemble, fusing live musicians with machines. The 3-piece band will consist of drums and synth with Boxcutter laying down samples and improvised bass guitar lines.

Last month, RTÉ Lyric FM broadcast a special live performance of Boxcutter as their contribution to the 2008 EBU Arts Birthday celebrations on 28.01.2008. The set featured some brand new material never heard before, as well as elements of older tracks reworked and recombined. Listen Here

Supporting Acts
Also on the night, special performances from both established and up-coming homegrown talent. Ed Devane's live set will feature his own home-made instrument alongside a myriad of delay pedals and a hand-held pda. Ed plans to use his baritone, tabletop, stringed instrument in an unconventional percussive manner to generate crunchy stoned beats. He's no stranger to Dublin breaks with releases on Touchin' Bass, Spacebar Sentiments and Takeover & new Irish label Mantrap.
Listen Ed Devane [Spring 2007]

A student of Trinity College's Music and Multimedia Technology course, Conor Hinfey aka Kachanski merges field recordings with his virus synth to create a blend of real world sounds, rave tinged synth lines and intensely programmed rhythms and breaks. His tracks meld all this with a spatial dynamic to create an organically flowing malaise of sonic events and textures. Warming up the system is Stasis resident Patch, armed with his delay unit and a record bag full of dubby electronica.

Visuals
Visual support comes from Kavi [Stasis / Parastate999], Relict [Parastate999], John Lineen [Stasis] & Razz [Stasis].

Sound Quality
Inspired by the standards of Sonar Festival, Stasis has adopted a policy of never comprising itself in terms of sound quality. For Tailors Hall we installed a €20,000 rig for the night & for this Boxcutter gig we have arranged for the installation of a 6k rig in the much smaller venue of Dame Lane.
